The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Clifford E. Robinett (ASN: 35057003), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Field Artillery Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 29 October 1944 in France. Corporal Robinett was assisting in the operation of an Observation Post at Malmaisen, France, which was subject to enemy harassing fire at irregular intervals. He voluntarily, and with total disregard to his own safety, left the protection of the Observation Post and repaired a telephone line that had been knocked out by shell fire so that the officer conducting fire could continue with his mission. Two rounds landed within 100 yards of him while he was repairing the line. On the same day the observers were driven to the basement by direct hits on the Observation Post. After having been warned of the danger of being hit, and that he should wait until the firing ceased; Corporal Robinett voluntarily and with total disregard to his own safety, proceeded to the top floor of the building and returned with the telephone, thereby enabling the observer to maintain communication with the Battalion Fire Direction Center. While on the top floor, one round crashed into the room he was in and showered him with plaster and bricks. The utter disregard for personal safety displayed by Corporal Robinett reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
