Headquarters, XII Corps, General Orders No. 35 (November 20, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant(Field Artillery) George H. Robertson (ASN: 0-1167183), United States Army, for gallantry in action while swerving with the *** Field Artillery Battalion, XII Corps, in action against the enemy on 14 September 1944, in France. While the *** Infantry was heavily engaged with the enemy, Lieutenant Robertson, pilot, and an artillery observer, were in routine flight over the area. Suddenly they noticed a tremendous concentration of enemy tanks and Infantry preparing to launch a counter-attack on the regimental positions. Immediately the artillery observer called for the fire of his battery upon the enemy assembly point. He notified headquarters and continued to call fire missions until he was directing the fire of 36 artillery pieces upon the enemy area. Since the plane had been in the air for more than an hour and a half it was necessary to land and refuel. After a hurried refueling job, the two men immediately took off again and returned to their previous mission. After the remaining enemy had dispersed, he called for the fire of all tank destroyers attached to the *** Infantry and also directed the fire of the regimental cannon company. Despite a continued stream of ack-ack being fired at the plane, the two men continued to fly at heights not over 500 feet until the enemy was beaten completely. The courage, initiative and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Robertson reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
