Headquarters, XII Corps, General Orders No. 26 (April 5, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Bernard Rakoff (ASN: 31245452), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Detachment, Headquarters Company, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 2 March 1945, in Luxembourg. On this date, Private First Class Rakoff answering a call to adjust a Luxembourg Civilian Policeman who was injured in a mine explosion in the vicinity of Savelbern, Luxembourg, discovered that the casualty was lying in an unguarded mine field. The patient was thought to be dad but upon observation through glasses, it was ascertained that he was living. With total disregard for personal safety, Private First Class Rakoff entered the mine field, removed the trip wire from around the victim’s legs and evacuated him from the field. He then assisted in giving medical treatment to the patient. The skill, initiative, and utter disregard for personal safety displayed by Private First Class Rakoff reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
