The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Charles T. Prewett (ASN: 35090296), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the *** Field Artillery Battalion, XII Corps, in action against the enemy on 30 September 1944, in France. When his battery received severe counter-battery fire from enemy artillery a near miss set fire to a loaded ammunition truck. Utterly disregarding his personal safety, Technician Fifth Grade Prewett jumped out of his foxhole and pulled the flaming camouflage net and tarpaulin from the ammunition truck in spite of the fact that many of the cases of ammunition were already ablaze. Aided by companions, summoned by his aggressive leadership and daring, he succeeded in extinguishing the fire, saving lives and precious material as well. The cool-handedness of Technician Fifth Grade Prewett, his initiative, and his devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
