The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Curtis A. Phillips (ASNP 35730099), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Engineer Combat Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 6 February 1945, in Luxembourg. While engaged in construction of a foot bridge, Technician Fifth Grade Phillips volunteered to cross the Sauer River with three comrades and drag a line to the far shore. He and his comrades swam with the line to the far shore amid a lethal hail of enemy fie. The line was broken by overturned assault boats. Undaunted, a second and third attempt was made to secure the line but it was again broken. Technician Fifth Grade Phillips’ brave determination in the face of great danger reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
