The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Joseph W. Petras (ASN: 0-1283827), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in France, on 23 and 25 June 1944. On 23 June 1944, Captain Petras, with great courage and utter disregard for his own safety, led his company against a heavily fortified enemy strongpoint overlooking the city of Cherbourg, France. The company gained its objective under withering fire, suffering heavy losses, and later made an orderly withdrawal, upon orders from higher headquarters. During the night Captain Petras reorganized his company for a renewed assault upon the objective which was shortly thereafter neutralized. On 25 June 1944, Captain Petras’ company was given the lead in the assault upon the next enemy strongpoint and again he was at the head of his company, encouraging his men by his inspiring, fearless leadership. While so engaged, Captain Petras was seriously wounded by enemy machine gun fire. He was evacuated to the rear over his demands to remain with the company, and his last words before the men pressed on to secure the strong point were, “Look after them (his men).” Captain Petras’ utter fearlessness, conspicuous leadership and courageous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
