“Work Horse of the Western Front – The Story of the 30th Infantry Division” By Robert L. Hewitt

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Carleton L. Summers (ASN: 20232607), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 14 January 1945, in Belgium. Private First Class Summers distinguished himself during an enemy counterattack which was led by enemy tanks and which threatened to cause a withdrawal of his comrades. Private First Class Summers advanced aggressively to a spot in front of friendly lines and delivered accurate bazooka fire at the enemy tanks which crippled two of them. With their supporting tanks disabled, the enemy counterattackers were forced to withdraw. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Summers, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
