    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Charles L. Palumbo (ASN: 0-1300371), United States Army, for gallantry in action while against the enemy in the vicinity of San Pietro, Italy, on 8 December 1943. Lieutenant Palumbo led his Infantry Company in a successful assault on the enemy stronghold of Hill 950. Under heavy grenade and machinegun fire, he displayed outstanding leadership in attacking strongly fortified enemy positions on the hill. First Lieutenant Palumbo’s gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
