Headquarters, XII Corps, General Orders No. 27 (April 11, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Angelo Palo (ASN: 32911626), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Chemical Mortar Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 20 – 21 March 1945, in Germany. During an attack by 50 enemy troops on his platoon position on the night of 20 – 21 March 1945 at Obr Olm, Germany, Technician Fifth Grade Palo, radio operator, immediately put his radio into operation to call for reinforcements. In spite of the danger of flying shell fragments from heavy enemy bazooka fire and rifle faire, Technician Fifth Grade Palo, on his own volition, remained at the radio. Warned by an officer to take cover, he persisted until his message got through. Later, under heavy artillery fire, he remained at the radio and assisted in jamming the enemy observer’s frequency so that accurate registration was impossible. Technician Fifth Grade Palo’s complete disregard for personal safety and courage under fire reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
