Headquarters, XII Corps, General Orders No. 18 (March 4, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Dan S. Orr (ASN: 0-1822183), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Tank Destroyer Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 17 December 1944, in Germany. After withdrawal of friendly infantry, Lieutenant Orr gallantly elected to employ his platoon of tank destroyers in an unorthodox manner to attempt to delay an enemy infantry and tank attack. Under intense small arms, automatic weapons, anti-tank and artillery fire he maintained constant contact with his destroyers. After destruction of ten enemy tanks, an unestimated number of enemy infantry, and after being flanked by the enemy he was forced to withdraw. His bold move threw the enemy ranks into a state of confusion, delayed their attack, and made possible the successful withdrawal of a friendly Regimental Headquarters. His keen judgment, initiative, leadership and devotion to duty exemplify the finest traditions of the Military Service.
