The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Takeshi Onuma (ASN: 30106208), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 442d Regimental Combat Team, 36th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 November 1944, near Biffontaine, France. When his platoon’s advance was halted by the intense fire of a well concealed machine gun on a dominating ridge, Private First Class Onuma boldly crawled forward through a heavily mined and booby-trapped area until he was only twenty yards from the enemy emplacement. Without thought of personal safety, he stood up in full view of the enemy and hurled a grenade into the hostile position. Then, firing his automatic rifle as he advanced, he rushed the strongpoint, killing one and wounding the other two members of the machine gun crew. Frightened by the ferociousness of his attack, two other enemy machine gun crews abandoned their weapons and fled. The inspiring gallantry and aggressive determination of Private First Class Onuma in neutralizing a formidable enemy strongpoint reflect the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
