Headquarters, XII Corps, General Orders No. 27 (November 2, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Daniel A. O’Keefe (ASN: 0-1182673), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the *** Field Artillery Observation Battalion, XII Corps, in action against the enemy on 15 September 1944, in France. Lieutenant O’Keefe was in charge of a flash team which during the enemy attack was cut off from friendly troops. With total disregard for his own safety, Lieutenant O’Keefe led the uninjured to safety, then returned alone through the enemy lines four times to bring back the wounded. Each trip was made under heavy small arms and mortar fire. Lieutenant O’Keefe’s disregard for his own safety to go to the aid of his wounded comrades reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
