Headquarters, III Corps, General Orders No. 27 (February 18, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery), [then Sergeant] Roger C. Nottingham (ASN: 0-2006456), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 253d Armored Field Artillery Battalion, III Corps. On 5 – 6 January 1945, near ****, Belgium, Lieutenant Nottingham, as tank sergeant, accompanied the Artillery Observer in support of a tank company. With complete disregard for his own safety he unhesitatingly exposed himself to enemy mortar and small arms fire, in order to relay effectively fire adjustment commands directed against enemy counterattacks. The forward observer was wounded when enemy patrols infiltrated and surrounded the position. Thereupon he ably assumed the observer’s duties. Lieutenant Nottingham’s gallantry and coolness under fire exemplified the highest traditions of the military service.
