The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant Charles Ira Murray (MCSN: 0-700), United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary and conspicuous bravery and efficiency while serving with the Seventy-Ninth Company, Sixth Regiment (Marines), 2d Division, A.E.F., during the advance upon Bouresches, France, on the night of 6 June 1918. Having been shot through both arms by machine-gun fire and being no longer able to advance, First Lieutenant Murray refused assistance and walked to the rear alone.
