The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Corporal] Fred Mueller (ASN: 33027768), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 6th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron (Mechanized), III Corps, in action against the enemy on 14 December 1944 in the town of *****, Germany. Sergeant Muller’s platoon was subjected to a heavy artillery and mortar barrage followed by an enemy counter attack. From positions on high ground the enemy was able to cover the escape route of the platoon. Sergeant Mueller and a comrade with complete disregard for their personal safety, unhesitatingly engaged an enemy machine gun crew about 50 yards away. Despite the fact that his comrade was mortally wounded by intense counter-fire, he continued his action against the enemy and succeeded in knocking out the gun and crew. The gallantry and courageous conduct of Sergeant Mueller reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
