The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Joseph J. Moran (ASN: 35528313), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery A, 253d Field Artillery Battalion, III Corps, in action against the enemy on 3 January 1945, near *****, Belgium. Immediately after the enemy artillery concentrations landed near his battery position, Technician Fifth Grade Moran obtained the necessary data for shell reports. Before a completion of the task another concentration landed. Realizing the need of obtaining immediate information as to the location of the enemy batteries, he courageously continued and obtained the necessary data for the third shell report, although well aware of the danger of further shelling. The tenacity of purpose and courage displayed by Technician Fifth Grade Moran reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
