The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Cavalry) Ivan L. McCracken (ASN: 0-432930), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Troop A, 6th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron (Mechanized), III Corps, in action against the enemy from 6 January 1945 to 121 January 1945, in Luxembourg. Captain McCracken, Troop Commander, displayed sound tactical judgment and unusual bravery under fire. His forceful, vigorous and courageous leadership inspired his men to unceasing efforts. He repeatedly took the lead in the advance of his troop against much superior enemy forces until he was wounded by enemy fire. Despite his wound he refused evacuation until he had given a complete report of the tactical situation to his superiors. The repeated exemplary conduct of Captain McCracken and his superb gallantry are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
