Headquarters, XII Corps, General Orders No. 23 (March 22, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant J. P. Mauzy (ASN: 35730434), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Engineer Combat Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 7 February 1945, in Luxembourg. Strong points on the far shore of the Sauer River were being attacked by waves of Infantry, crossing the river in engineer assault boats. Sergeant Mauzy’s assault boat was sunk in mid-stream by heavy enemy fire making it necessary for him to swim through the icy water to the friendly shore. Undaunted and with complete disregard for his own personal safety he commandeered another assault boat and made five trips across the river with Infantrymen. His fearless and outstanding devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
