Headquarters, 25th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 420 (November 25, 1950)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Vernon English (ASN: 0-1330532), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 3 September 1950, Captain English organized a train of three vehicles and a tank to carry critically needed supplies to a unit cut off near Chirwon, Korea. As the convoy moved through a pass, the enemy opened fire from commanding positions. Standing up fully exposed to the hostile action, Captain English directed fire of the tank and kept the group moving to reach the forward unit. Returning with wounded, he again successfully brought the convoy through the enemy lines, recovering en route a foot patrol which had been ambushed and had suffered a casualty. Captain English’s gallant leadership and notable military skill reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
