The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Malcolm N. MacIntyre (ASN: 0-397475), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Field Artillery Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 20 January 1945, in Luxembourg. At about 1115 hours Captain MacIntyre was at his battery position near Giladorf, Luxembourg, when hostile 105-mm. shells began landing in the area at about two or three minute intervals, one round striking within ten feet of one of the artillery pieces and injuring one man. Captain MacIntyre did not take shelter and proceeded to take a shelling report. While he was so engaged and in an exposed position another round burst within 30 or 40 yards of him. He went to the crater it formed, to take further measurements. Finding that the two azimuths agreed, he at once forwarded the information to his battalion FDC, and information was relayed to higher headquarters. Consequently counterbattery fire from friendly batteries was returned within 25 minutes from the time the first enemy shell landed, and while the shelling was still in progress. No further fire was received in the immediate area of his battery. Although Captain MacIntyre was under shell fire during the entire time of this incident – a total of approximately 30 rounds having fallen in the area – he remained calm, and efficiently collected the needed data. Captain MacIntyre’s prompt and courageous actions, beyond the normal call of duty and without thought of self, exemplify the highest traditions of the military service.
