The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Bernard J. Lyons (ASN: 0-1184881), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters Battery, 253d Armored Field Artillery Battalion, III Corps. On 5 – 6 January 1945, near ****, Belgium, Lieutenant Lyons, artillery forward observer in support of a tank company, by his accurate adjustment of fire from exposed positions, was responsible for the repulse of two counterattacks. After enemy patrols had infiltrated into the position, he unhesitatingly and with complete disregard for his own safety, left the protection of his tank to establish personal liaison with the tank company commander, thereafter continuing to adjust artillery fire until he was wounded. Lieutenant Lyons gallantry and devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military service.
