The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal John C. Llewellyn (ASN: 13188783), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Engineer Combat Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 8 February 1945, in Germany. Corporal Llewellyn’s platoon was constructing a footbridge across the Our River when the boat in which he was riding capsized. Corporal Llewellyn after having safely attained the bank of the stream saw one of his comrades in distress. He ran along the bank, plunged in the stream and rescued the drowning soldier. He then administered artificial resuscitation even though he was being harassed by enemy snipers on the far shore. The courage, initiative, and utter disregard for personal safety displayed by Corporal Llewellyn reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
