The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Anthony W. Lio (ASN: 36543256), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 793d Field Artillery Battalion, XIX Corps, in action against the enemy in Germany on 23 December 1944. Private Lio demonstrated admirable ingenuity and courage by crossing uncharted minefields on skis to establish vitally important wire communications lines to an advance observation post. With complete disregard for his own personal safety, Private Lio exposed himself to intense and frequent enemy fire, as well as the hazards of enemy and friendly mined areas, yet continued his mission until he had successfully installed secure communications channels and the fire missions were completed. The courage, skill, and untiring devotion to duty displayed by Private Lio reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
