The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Edward J. Leahey (ASN: 32042644), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 1340th Engineer Combat Battalion, V Corps, in action against the enemy from 6 to 8 November 1944. During this period, the 1340th Engineer Combat Battalion was engaged as Infantry in defending a certain vital area. Private First Class Leahey, a Company Aid Man, accompanied his unit to its defensive position. The whole area received constant artillery and mortar fire from the high ground overlooking the positions. Despite the fact that the troops were protected by covered slit trenches, the casualty rate was heavy and continuous. For two days and nights, without sleep or rest during penetratingly cold, wet weather, Private Leahey, without regard for his own safety, voluntarily worked under constant exploding shells and flying shell fragments as he sought out and rendered medical aid to some 40 wounded comrades. His gallant work save the lives and eased the suffering of many. On the morning of 8 November, during an unusually heavy concentration of shell fire, Private Leahey lost his life while administering first aid to a soldier wounded by flying shell fragments. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
