Headquarters, XII Corps, General Orders No. 23 (March 22, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Cavalry) Richard E. Lasswell (ASN: 0-1030794), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron (Mechanized), XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 20 February 1945, in Germany. Lieutenant Lasswell conducted his platoon in dismounted attack across the Moselle River into Wincheringen, Germany. Although without support, he started his men in the fight for the town. Temporarily halted by superior forces and surrounded in a school building, Lieutenant Lasswell’s leadership and personal daring so inspired his men that every enemy attack was repulsed. He maintained his position until support arrived and then led his men from the building in the final assault and capture of the town. Lieutenant Lasswell’s courage and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
