The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Herman S. Landrith (ASN: 34774384), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Engineer Combat Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 7 February 1945, in Luxembourg. During an assault crossing of the Sauer River, Sergeant Landrith crossed Infantrymen to the far shore in the face of direct enemy fire and evacuated a wounded comrade back to the friendly shore. His boat being useless due to damage by enemy fire, he swam the icy river bank to the far shore and administered first aid to wounded Infantrymen, although pinned down several times by enemy fire. Throughout the action his heroic disregard for his own personal safety, and driving perseverance, reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
