The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Cavalry) Arthur Lawrence Lambert (ASN: 0-24731), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters, 42d Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, 2d Cavalry Group (Separate), TWELFTH U.S. Army Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 14 April 1945, in Germany. Assuming command of a task force of two troops of the 42d Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, reinforced by light tanks, Major Lambert accomplished with minimum loss of American lives the complete blocking of all roads on the eastern exits of Bayrouth. To accomplish this he passed through territory heavily defended by the enemy, in strength much greater than his own. Despite receiving enemy attacks from both flanks, he continually pushed his advance remaining always with the most engaged elements of his command and inspiring them by his courage and calmness under fire to rapidly overcome enemy resistance and establish road blocks on the exits of Bayrouth. His daring leadership of a small force resulted in the killing of over one hundred Germans and the capture of over eight hundred prisoners. His courage, leadership, and tactical skill exhibited are in accordance with the highest standards of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the Military Service of the United States.
