The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Frank J. Kovak (ASN: 36361719), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Anti-Aircraft Artillery (AW) Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 14 March 1945, in Germany. At approximately 1430 hours a man ran to the Command Post of the 1st Platoon of Battery A, in Erdorf, Germany, informing those present that two men were wounded in a nearby mined area. Private First Class Kovak, knowing that the area was mined, proceeded with utter disregard for his own personal safety and unhesitatingly entered the mined field. After first aid had been rendered to the wounded men he aided in the evacuation of the more seriously wounded man and then returned to the mined area to assist in the evacuation of the other wounded soldier. The utter disregard for personal safety displayed by Private First Class Kovak reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
