The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant John Jacob Kime, Jr. (ASN: 15044932), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Engineer Combat Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 8 December 1944, in France. Staff Sergeant Kime was given the mission of completing a partially constructed 110 foot Bailey Bridge over a railroad overpass near Wittring, France, about 1400 hours on 8 December 1944. This bridge was of vital importance to the success of a proposed assault crossing across the Saar River early the morning of 9 December 1944. As the crew, under the direction of Staff Sergeant Kime commenced work, the enemy, whose positions on the opposite side of the river gave them direct observation and field of fire on the bridge site, directed an intense rifle and machine gun fire on the site. Staff Sergeant Kime reorganized his crew and their work so that only a very small number were exposed to the enemy fire at any one time. As the construction of the bridge rapidly progressed under his brilliant leadership, he continually exposed himself to the intense fire in order that he could better supervise the work. Though in grave personal danger, never did he hesitate for a moment in making decision or in giving cheerful words of encouragement to his men. Under his inspiring leadership, heroic example and calm efficiency, his men continued to work swiftly and with no show of panic and the bridge was successfully completed at about 1900 on 8 December 1944. The courageous actions of Staff Sergeant Kime, his extraordinary leadership and indomitable will to complete his mission in spite of great personal danger contributed greatly not only to the completion of a vital bridge but to the successful crossing of the Saar River at this point. Staff Sergeant Kime’s gallant actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the Military Forces of the United States.
