Headquarters, XII Corps, General Orders No. 31 (April 21, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal John J. Kellogg (ASN: 34674022), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Engineer Combat Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 10 February 1945, in Germany. When a direct mortar hit wounded members of a boat crew during daylight assault crossing operations of the Sauer River, Corporal Kellogg without hesitation or regard for personal safety, jumped from his boat, dragged the wounded to shore, secured medical aid and moved them to the friendly shore. He personally carried the casualties to the aid station across terrain that was being blasted by enemy shells. When the shelling increased until troops could not reach the river bank, he transported supplies across. The gallantry of Corporal Kellogg reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
