The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Corps of Engineers) Robert H. Jensen (ASN: 0-1102316), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Engineer Combat Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 7 February 1945, in Germany. On this date Captain Jensen’s company was constructing a bridge across the Our River in the vicinity of Wallendorf, Germany. They were driven away from the site by small arms, automatic weapons, mortar, rocket, and artillery fire. The bridging equipment including a crane had to be abandoned at the site. After two attempts to recover the vitally needed crane had failed, Captain Jensen went to the river in the face of sporadic enemy fire and retrieved the crane. He drove it 1,000 yards through an intense enemy barrage to attain a covered position. His devotion to duty, gallantry above and beyond the call of duty, his selfless disregard of personal safety were an inspiration to the officers and men of his organization and reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
