Headquarters, 4th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 731 (April 20, 1967)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Specialist Fourth Class Leslie Paul Bernstein (ASN: US-51585751), United States Army, for gallantry in action against a hostile force. On 14 March 1967, Specialist Bernstein distinguished himself by heroic action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 22th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, during a search and destroy operation. At this time, Company A came under heavy attack by an estimated company of North Vietnamese Regulars. Specialist Fourth Class Bernstein, the Radio-Telephone Operator for the 2d Platoon, immediately advanced to a forward position, although he was a target for intense enemy sniper fire. When his Platoon Sergeant fell, mortally wounded, Specialist Fourth Class Bernstein took charge of the grave situation and rallied his platoon to press forward to a location from which they were able to eliminate numerous enemy positions. During the ensuing action, Specialist Fourth Class Bernstein received fragmentation wounds in both legs. He rapidly established a defensive position, which he held while directing artillery and air strikes on the enemy, and remained there until mortally wounded by a heavy concentration of enemy fire. Specialist Fourth Class Bernstein’s personal sacrifice, inspiring leadership and unhesitating embrace of responsibility were instrumental in the company’s defense against the enemy onslaught. His unimpeachable valor in close combat against the enemy is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
