The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Chemical Warfare Service) Herman Hindin (ASN: 0-1035819), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Chemical Mortar Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 20 to 21 March 1945, in Germany. On this date, in Obr Olm, Germany, a section of the 1st Platoon, Company C, *** Chemical Mortar Battalion, was attacked by a force of 50 enemy troops. Lieutenant Hindin immediately established a strong defense and set up a radio to call for reinforcements. While in exposed positions he suffered two minor wounds but persisted in completing his call, Then without regard for personal safety he moved freely throughout the building directing and encouraging his men. Upon hearing a commotion at the door, he rushed out to refuse the enemy’s surrender ultimatum. His courage and cool efficiency under withering fire was instrumental in forcing the enemy to retreat after suffering heavy casualties. Later that night while subjected to a heavy artillery barrage, Lieutenant Hindin picked up the enemy’s observer on the radio and for two hours jammed the frequency to prevent accurate registration. Only after the attack ceased did he permit his wounds to be treated. The great courage and leadership ability of this intrepid officer reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
