The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Richard Hickman (ASN: 35660688), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the *** Field Artillery Battalion, XII Corps, in action against the enemy on 2 September 1944, in France. Corporal Hickman was a member of the forward observers party of his battalion attacked to the *** Infantry who were under enemy attack. Corporal Hickman observed an abandoned Infantry truck in danger of being captured. Despite enemy machine gun and mortar fire, he ran across sixty yards of open field to the vehicle, started it and returned it to the Infantry Command Post. Here he gave the Infantry Commander information concerning the attack which resulted in reinforcements being dispatched and the attack repulsed. The courage of Corporal Hickman reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
