The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Stanley C. Hettinger (ASN: 35867845), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Engineer Combat Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 7 February 1945, in Luxembourg. During an assault crossing of the Sauer River, Sergeant Hettinger crossed infantrymen to the far shore in the face of direct enemy fire. He took command of infantrymen while on the far shore and succeeded in holding off counter attacking enemy troops. He remained on the far shore for three days and three nights under intense enemy fire and in all, captured ten and killed two of the enemy. His actions in the face of great danger exemplified the highest traditions of the military service and reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
