The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Paul O. Herpin (ASN: 34003181), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Chemical Battalion (Motorized), XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 25 December 1944, in Luxembourg. Sergeant Herpin, while on Highway ***, ******, Luxembourg, witnessed the strafing by an enemy plane of an ambulance carrying wounded men. Disregarding personal safety while the enemy plane was still strafing in the immediate vicinity he rushed to the ambulance and attempted to remove the driver, who was wedged in the wrecked and burning vehicle, surrounded by flames. Unable to remove the already dead driver, he went to the aid of the wounded men in the burning ambulance and assisted in their removal and efficient application of first aid. His cool, efficient conduct and complete disregard for personal safety was instrumental in saving the lives of several severely wounded men. The courage and utter disregard for personal safety displayed by Technical Sergeant Herpin reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
