The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Corps of Engineers) James K. Henderson (ASN: 0-1102289), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Engineer Combat Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 10 February 1945, near Wallendorf, Germany. Captain Henderson’s unit was assigned the mission of making an assault boat crossing in the face of intense enemy fire. Captain Henderson leading his men, continued the operation under withering enemy fire until it was evident that the boats were going to be so badly shot up they would be of no use. In the midst of confusion he kept his men under control and withdrew them to comparative safety, at the same time heedlessly exposing himself to enemy fire in order to warn some more of his men of he danger ahead of them. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
