The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Katsuyoshi Hamamoto (ASN: 30106058), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 442d Regimental Combat Team, in action against the enemy on 25 August 1944 near Florence, Italy and 28 October 1944 near Biffontaine, France. When three men lay wounded 50 yards from enemy positions near Florence, Private Hamamoto attended and evacuated them. Near Biffontaine, when mortally wounded himself, he completed treating one man and then crawled ten yards to give aid to another wounded soldier. In the act of making a hypodermic injection he fell in death over his comrade. His gallant courage and devotion to his fellow man when death was upon him represent the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
