The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal John J. Grady (ASN: 32776686), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company D, *** Chemical Battalion (Motorized), XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 20 January 1945, in Luxembourg. Corporal Grady, a member of a forward observer party of the 2d platoon, Company D, although seriously wounded by shrapnel in the town of Berderf, Luxembourg, went for aid and assisted in the evacuation of his mortally wounded companion during heavy shell fire. Corporal Grady’s concern for his wounded companion, his refusal of medical aid and complete disregard for his personal safety and his own wounds until the mortally wounded member of his party was brought to a Medical Aid Station reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
