    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Chemical Warfare Service) Louie A. Goodson, Jr. (ASN: 0-543280), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the *** Chemical Mortar Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 24 – 25 March 1945, in Germany. On the night of 24 – 25 March, the 1st Platoon of Company C, was emplaced in Lecheim, Germany, awaiting orders to support the Infantry. The enemy counterattacked under support of an intense artillery barrage. Several vehicles including nearby ammunition truck received direct hits. The house in which Lieutenant Goodson and his men were billeted was shattered and set afire by the exploding ammunition and gasoline,. Wounding him and several of his men. Lieutenant Goodson administered first Aid to the seriously wounded and unmindful of his own wounds aided in carrying the others from the burning building to a place of safety. Not until the last man had been treated and evacuated did he seek medical aid for himself. His courage and cool efficiency were responsible for the saving of many lives and reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
