The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class George A. Iwamoto (ASN: 39926941), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 442d Regimental Combat Team, 92d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 5 April 1945, in Italy. As the second platoon of a rifle company advanced toward the summit of a mountain it was halted by heavy fire from well-protected enemy fortifications and suffered moderate casualties. Private First Class Iwamoto crawled forward through a minefield and administered first aid to the wounded. While treating a casualty approximately ten yards from the foe’s position, a grenade burst near him, hitting him on the right arm. Private First Class Iwamoto refused to be evacuated and continued to aid the wounded until the company’s objective was secured. His courageous devotion to duty reflects high credit on the Armed Forces.
