Headquarters, SIXTH U.S. Army, General Orders No. 5, (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Richard N. Fukano (ASN: 39001911), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 442d Regimental Combat Team, in action against the enemy on 29 October 1944, in France. During Company I’s heroic bayonet charge on the enemy’s strongly entrenched position, Private Fukano, with utter disregard for his own safety, remained with his men to treat approximately 30 wounded soldiers. On one occasion during the attack, when a rifleman was severely wounded, Private Fukano ran for 50 yards under intense machine gun and machine pistol fire to his aid. Quickly grasping the patient who was lying directly in the line of fire, he pulled him to a point of safety, administered first aid and evacuated him without delay. By his bravery and unselfish devotion to duty in the face of great danger, Private Fukano reflects credit upon himself and the armed forces of the United States.
