Headquarters, VII Corps, General Orders No. 24 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Raymond H. Fleming, Jr. (ASN: 446380), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 18th Field Artillery Battalion, VII Corps, in action against the enemy on 2 September 1944, in *******. Attacked by an estimated 100 of the enemy, Captain Fleming, with only eighty-five men in a truck column, repelled the numerous attacks undertaken by the enemy until such time as help was secured. When the enemy attempted to seize commanding terrain in full view of the enemy and over open ground, Captain Fleming led his men in an attack and secured the terrain. Returning to the main body of his forces, Captain Fleming directed fire on a coordinated attack by the enemy. Although the enemy was armed with a few machine guns and carbines, heavy casualties were inflicted on the enemy and their vehicles destroyed. Throughout the entire operation, Captain Fleming was constantly exposed to the withering fire of the enemy. The courage, coolness and disregard for personal safety displayed by this officer reflects highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
