The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Cavalry) Roland Englebright (ASN: 0-417399), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 2d Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron (Mechanized), XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 2 April 1945, in Germany. Having been given command of a task force with a mission of advancing on the valley of the Fulda River and protecting the right flank of he XII Corps, Major Englebright advanced rapidly overcoming very heavy resistance. Discovering that a large Allied P:risoner of War Camp lay near his line of advance, Major Englebright immediately directed his advance to that point. He was constantly with his leading elements making personal reconnaissance of every position under heavy small arms and mortar fire. So skillful and courageous was his leadership that the small force under his command killed or captured the enemy in the villages outside of Bad Orb and caused the disorganized retreat of a large enemy force holding the town. This resulted in the freeing of some 6,000 Allied Prisoners of War, including 1,600 Americans all badly in need of medical dare and food. The daring, quick grasp of opportunity, and personal leadership exhibited by Major Englebright in this instance, is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
