The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Zeno H. Ellis (ASN: 37369054), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Detachment, *** Anti-Aircraft Artillery (AW) Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 27 September 1944, in France. Technician Fifth Grade Ellis was attached as Medical Aid Man to a platoon furnishing anti-aircraft protection for the *** Field Artillery Battalion. At 1400 hours the artillery installations were subjected to intense enemy artillery fire. Several men were severely wounded. Realizing that the medical personnel present were unable to immediately give adequate attention to all these casualties, Technician Fifth Grade Ellis with his platoon sergeant, voluntarily exposed themselves to the enemy fire and attended to the wounded. The enemy shelling so increased in intensity that Technician Fifth Grade Ellis platoon withdrew as did elements of the artillery. Instead of withdrawing to comparative safety Technician Fifth Grade Ellis at great risk of life elected to remain and assist in the care and evacuation of the wounded. This unselfish devotion to duty aided in the alleviation of suffering of the wounded, made possible their speedy evacuation, and exemplifies the finest traditions of the Medical Corps.
