The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Frank E. Duhme, Jr. (ASN: 0-1184645), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery A, 177th Field Artillery Battalion, III Corps, in action against the enemy on 10 January 1944. Lieutenant Duhme was serving as Forward Observer with an infantry company near *****, Belgium, when his position was suddenly attacked by the enemy. Immediately he ordered one man to stand by the radio and call for supporting artillery fire to impede the progress of the attack. Then he calmly fought with the infantry, firing at point-blank range at the oncoming enemy, hurling hand grenades into their midst and standing fast to his position regardless of their proximity. After the attack was repulsed he promptly and solicitously assisted the Aid Men in the treatment and evacuation of a wounded infantryman. Lieutenant Duhme’s gallantry and courageous devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.
