The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Forest B. Deming (ASN: 0-1174556), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery C, *** Field Artillery Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 2 December 1944, in France. Battery C, *** Field Artillery Battalion, of which Lieutenant Deming was Executive Officer, was in firing position near Cappel, France. The battery was subjected to enemy artillery fire which resulted in the death of four cannoneers and injuries to others. Despite danger to himself, Lieutenant Deming carried on with an assigned mission and at the same time assisted in rendering first aid and evacuation of wounded. Lieutenant Deming’s leadership under fire was such that all cannoneers remained at their posts to complete the fire mission. The courage and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Deming’s reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
