The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technical Sergeant Albert DelGrego (ASN: 31105635), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Detachment, *** Medical Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 3 April 1945, in Germany. Technical Sergeant DelGrego volunteered to deliver whole blood to two field hospitals located at Niederstall and Birstein, Germany, even though he knew the combat situation made the trip extremely dangerous. He completed the trip successfully and then volunteered to lead an ambulance back through the enemy infiltrated territory. In the darkness, an American outpost failed to recognize the ambulance. In the resulting fire by the outpost, Technical Sergeant DelGrego was killed trying to make known to the outpost that hey were firing on friendly troops. His fearless devotion to duty, his placing of the care of the wounded paramount to his own life, and his indefatigable will to serve reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
