The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Daniel W. Curtin (ASN: 32917897), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Detachment, *** Field Artillery Battalion, XII Corps, in action against an armed enemy on 11 December 1944, in France. Technician Fifth Grade Curtin, Aid Man attached to the Sound Ranging Platoon, was one of a group which set out to equip and establish an OP for the platoon. Upon arriving at the OP the group was informed that a Captain had been lying wounded down the hill for about 3 1/2 hours, and as yet had not been aided. Technician Fifth Grade Curtin went down for the Captain, and found that there were three other wounded men there. With the help of other men in his group Technician Fifth Grade Curtin supervised the administering of First Aid and the evacuation of the four men. While being carried back, the Captain asked the group to evacuate four of his men who lay wounded on the slope of a hill on the other side of the valley, about 300 yards away. With litters obtained from Aid Men, Technician Fifth Grade Curtin and others in the group proceeded, in the face of enemy mortars and 88’s, to where these men were, and found not 4 but 10 wounded men, all litter cases. With the aid of another man in the party who was a former Aid Man, Technician Fifth Grade Curtin administered prompt First Aid and evacuated the wounded men. Throughout the evacuation he was under constant enemy artillery and mortar fire. The courage and utter disregard for personal safety displayed by Technician Fifth Grade Curtin reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
