The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant James R. Craver, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the THIRD Army in Germany, on 11 March 1945. During the action near Bonbogen, Germany, Sergeant Craver’s battery was subjected to heavy enemy artillery fire and Sergeant Craver was wounded. Disregarding his painful condition he organized a howitzer section, returned the enemy fire and with the aid of an aerial observer effected an adjustment that enabled the remainder of his battery to lay an effective barrage on the German position. Although a nearby burning ammunition truck showered the area with shrapnel, Sergeant Craver heroically maintained his position until the enemy fire had been silenced. His aggressive leadership and courageous actions reflect the highest credit upon himself are in keeping with the fine traditions of the military service.
